Aren’t you just a therapist?

I’m Definitely NOT a Therapist.

and I proudly do NOT diagnose, treat, or cure ‘disease’…

So what is the difference between a Hypnotist and Therapist? From time to time, a new client will ask me, “Aren’t you really just a therapist?” The answer is “No way!” (no offense to any therapist). The difference between a Therapist and a Hypnotist is night and day. Let me explain…A Therapist, or Psychotherapist, is defined as someone who treats psychological problems. They are treating the specific symptoms of a medical condition. The treatment aims to reduce the unwanted symptoms, but generally assumes there is no permanent cure and therefore the problem may and probably will persist indefinitely. Therefore, treatment is often on-going for years if not decades. I believe therapy has it’s place as an important social science and healing art. It’s necessary to diagnose and treat psychological disorders, but it’s definitely not hypnosis.

I’m a Hypnotist and I’m proud of it.

A Hypnotist is a person who induces the state of hypnosis, as a tool, to assist a client in changing unwanted habits. We do not concern ourselves with a ‘label’ of disease (especially because it’s not our job) and we assume that you as the client are in basic working order and of sound mind and body to begin with. We do not view you as broke, deficient, or lacking in any way. We only assume you lack the specific strategy, technique, or basic information to achieve your goals. In most cases the goal is replacing a old unwanted habits with a new set of habits that work better to produce the results you want – like quitting smoking or healthier eating habits. Our job, as your consultant, is to assist you in replacing the old unwanted habits with a new set of habits that work better as quickly and judiciously as possible – usually in a year tops or significantly less.

Let’s do the Math…

A PHD on average requires a total of 8-10 years of full time study to complete. That includes 4 years for your Bachelors + 2 years for your Masters + 2-6 years for your PHD. That’s an average of 8-12 years and just 2-8 years in a particular subject. If you were to get a PHD in Psychology you’d focus your study for 2-8 years on just that. That’s a lot of ‘studying’ but it’s not a lot of practical, real world experience.

The average Masters in Psychology requires 1500 to 3000 hours of supervision (meaning seeing patients while being supervised by a veteran therapist with a PHD). Realize, the maximum of 3000 hours, translates to only 1.5 years of actual experience working with patients.

As a Hypnotist, I’ve been seeing clients full-time for 12 years. That’s approximately 24,000 hours of face to face time with clients – focused on identifying what they want and helping them get it. Moreover, the majority of those hours were spent specifically on helping them either lose weight, quit smoking, or reduce stress. Imagine how much better you would be after practicing, improving, and perfecting the same skill thousands upon thousands of times.

According to research, the average full-time therapist sees 25-45 patients per week. For years, I’ve personally seen 60+ clients per week (that’s double the average), and I judge our success by clear and measurable results – not ‘Thank you’ cards.

As a Coach & Hypnotist I do not diagnose, treat, or cure disease. In short, I'm not a therapist. Here's why...

When was the last time that you met a therapist who would give you an extra session for free if you didn’t reach your goal in the number of sessions you expected? What therapist offers ‘free followups’ to make sure you reach and maintain your results?

The answer is ZERO.

Furthermore, most don’t even have a well-defined goal that’s specific and measurable. And there is nothing wrong with that if you are looking for a catharsis, seeking compassion, or just want to be heard. Or, if you like that long term counseling approach.

When you arrive for your weekly visit you won’t be treated like a wounded bird with a broken wing. One of our auditors will help you to quickly assess what’s going great, where you are getting stuck, and what needs to happen next each week. We’re going to be compassionate, understanding, and caring – but our real focus is to encourage and support you getting results.

Unlike feeling ‘better for a time’, results don’t wear off. It’s like the difference between imagining what it feels like to climb mount everest, and actually doing it, then comparing notes. Nothing touches clear measurable results when it comes to personal development. It let’s you know it’s working, it feels good long term, and makes your life better. And without results, how else will you know if it’s even working.

In the self-help field nobody’s perfect
but there is a lot of room for improvement
